The 2009 Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) Doctoral Consortium was held on Monday June 14, 2009 in Austin Texas. This was a very successful year, with the 24 submissions (the largest number of to date), and 14 students presenting their work to a group of 10 faculty and researchers. Students were invited to participate in the Doctoral Consortium after submitting abstracts, and participating in an exhaustive reviewing and revision process. Discussion at the consortium was lively and thought provoking with faculty offering support, new approaches, and words of wisdom. Students presented papers representing their doctoral dissertation; their research focused on all aspects of digital library systems and innovative tool and interface development. Beyond providing feedback and advice, the panel members were able to help students connect with researchers working in similar areas throughout the conference.

The National Science Foundation supported student travel to the Doctoral Consortium (awards IIS-0918459 and IIS-0535057). Students were asked to participate in the Digital Library Curriculum project led by the University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

It has been six months since these papers were presented, and some of the students are now completing and defending their dissertations, and embarking on their careers as scholars. We look forward to hearing their presentations at future conferences, and know that their work will prove valuable for future digital library development.

We hope you'll enjoy the papers of those who chose to submit final versions to TCDL for publication. The participants in the consortium were:
