Digital Libraries in Education: Analytical Survey
At the end of 2002 the analytical survey Digital Libraries in Education1 was completed. This survey was developed within frame of a project aimed at Digital Libraries in Education (DLEs) in accordance with the strategic goals of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE). (The project coordinator was Sergei Christochevsky.) UNESCO intends to foster new forms of networking between teacher-training institutions and teachers, using digital libraries (DLs) as well as production and deployment of digital educational materials.
The survey was the result of an effort of the Analytical Survey International Working Group in which Leonid Kalinichenko had the responsibility of coordinating author.
Members of the Analytical Survey Working Group include:
Daniel Atkins (USA, University of Michigan)
Edward Fox (USA, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University)
David Fulker (USA, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado)
Yannis Ioannidis (Greece, University of Athens)
Stephan Koernig (Germany, Darmstadt University of Technology)
Bertram Lud?scher (USA, San Diego Supercomputing Center, University of California, San Diego)
Mary Marlino (USA, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado)
Pasquale Savino (Italy, Istituto di Elaborazione della Informazione, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Pisa)
Narasimhiah Seshagiri (India, Supercomputer Education and Research Centre, Bangalore)
Tamara R. Sumner (USA, University of Colorado, Boulder)
Alexey Ushakov (USA, University of California, Santa Barbara)
Michael Wright (USA, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado)
The UNESCO IITE web site describes the Digital Libraries in Education: Analytical Survey as follows:
"This analytical survey provides an overview of current technologies for Digital Libraries in Education (DLEs) and their anticipated evolution through consideration of several DLE projects that have been carefully selected to provide for the identification of typical DLE features, characterization of the current state of DLE technologies, clarification of the social and organizational issues surrounding DLE development, and prediction of the DLE impact on education. Advanced frameworks and methodologies related to DLEs are described to forecast the further evolution of DLE technologies and applications. The survey is not intended to be an exhaustive coverage of DLEs, nor is it an aim to meld all the perspectives into one coherent picture, but rather to present them all. This information could serve a ground for planning the forthcoming phases of future DLE projects."
The survey has been recently printed by the UNESCO IITE. For information regarding how to obtain a copy, please contact:

Call for Nominations
The first term of Prof. Erich Neuhold as the Chairman of the IEEE Technical Committee on Digital Libraries (TCDL) is coming to an end soon, and an election for Chairperson of the IEEE TCDL for the next two years has been scheduled. Dr. Neuhold is eligible and willing to be elected for another term, but additional nominations from TCDL members are also welcome. Please note: nominees for Chairperson must be members of the IEEE Computer Society.
Bonita Wilson, bwilson@cnri.reston.va.us, editor of the IEEE TCDL Bulletin and member of the IEEE TCDL Executive Committee, will collect the nominations. The deadline for submitting nominations is 30 October 2003. Nominated candidates will be asked whether they would be willing to serve. If so, a "planned action" statement and a brief CV will be collected from the nominee. The election itself will be handled by the IEEE Computer Society.
